About Us
We are much more than a kennel in Aroeira
The Aroeira Kennel belongs to the Friends of Animals Association (AOAA), created on December 7, 1982, being the first zoophilic institution in the Setúbal district. It was recognized as a public utility by decision of the Almada Municipal Assembly on March 4, 1983.
Before the association was created, the space where the Aroeira Kennel is now was a scene of horror, with chained animals... hungry, sick animals, covered in fleas... but, with dedication and hard work from all volunteers and management, everything possible was done to ensure that the dogs in the shelter had a quality of life and love, with adoption being a priority.
We can proudly say that currently our dogs don't have a single flea, they have weekly baths and grooming or whenever needed. They also receive all the medical care they need, whether preventive, treatment, or urgent.
Over the years, the association has been dedicated to improving the precarious conditions in which the animals were living, suffering from cold, rain, excessive heat, and other vicissitudes. The winter weather is terrible, requiring a great effort to safeguard the dogs and repair the facilities afterwards.
With almost 40 years of existence, AOAAA has made an effort to collect many abandoned, neglected, or mistreated dogs in the Municipality of Almada, sterilizing females, including females from packs, street dogs, or needy families, and in the effort to reintegrate these animals through adoption. Although the current kennel is located in Aroeira, the work for public health and animal defense extends throughout the Municipality.
The Kennel
Therefore, the Association has focused on seeking alternatives that involve the transfer of municipal land and the construction of a new community kennel.
A space is intended that will provide useful services to the community and will contribute to the financial sustainability of the project, while developing training actions, guided tours, and other initiatives aimed at the coexistence between the animals and the inhabitants of the Municipality.
In this sense, the focus of the Association's activities has been to sensitize the population, in order to:
- Reduce abandonment and increase the adoption of animals
- Show the social usefulness that these animals have for society
- Gain support for the alternative of a new multi-purpose kennel.
All our effort would not have results without the donations we receive and the work of the kennel staff and all the volunteers who embrace this project with heart and soul.
